Viscaya is a place where there is no separation of the plants and the gardens, where they blend together gracefully. This allows you to see how the plants grow, what their needs are, how they look in a mature state and what looks good with them.
As a working garden, each time you visit, you will be able to see how our plants are cared for. You will see plants that are unique and have stood the test of time in our Pacific Northwest environment. Whether novice or aficionado, there is something for everyone here, because we believe that every human is a gardener at heart; some may just be unaware of it.
We have also created 4 distinct gardens at the 4 plexes that are on the property. Each home has a very small area in the front with one large maple tree. We did this so you can see that a beautiful, peaceful space does not require acres of land or a multi-million dollar home. Each example has hardscaping, seating areas and most have water features as well.
That is what Viscaya is all about: Allowing each person to become inspired and acknowledge the ‘gardener within’. Once that is recognized, there is no limit to what can be created in large or small spaces. Ideas are ubiquitous and free. The peaceful passion for gardening can be felt around every turn. The only thing you won’t find is a judgment on your abilities. Each gardener starts out with the same skills and grows forward from there.
There are several different gardens within Viscaya: An orchard with both common and unique fruit trees; a vegetable garden that has the newest and most unusual vegetables to grow; herb gardens that show people what thrives in our area -- and what struggles as well. Any avid gardener will tell you this truth: all of us fail at some time with our plants. The goal of Viscaya is to make sure you see these successes and failures firsthand and, from that experience, be able to have greater success with your own garden.
Although we stand for local and independent, we will also go to great lengths to make sure that what we sell you is of the highest quality. And always, we will be trending forward while still respecting those plants that have stood the test of time. At Viscaya we want you to grasp that gardening is multi-layered. It can feed not only the body, but the mind and soul as well.
We understand that life can be overwhelming, that each of us does the best we can in every moment. At Viscaya, we strive to help you make each moment count, because the beauty and grace in a garden can be carried with you, affecting you wherever you go.
The quickest pathway to enlightenment is experience and knowledge. You will find plenty of both at Viscaya.
